For the Philippines to improve would require a wholesale cultural change. Being a friendly people is not sufficient, per se, to be successful.

The Philippines is an economic basket case after so many years of American puppet idiots running the country. The US uses them as a doormat to maintain its Asian hegemony while the Filipinos live in fourth world conditions mired in corruption and theft of the national treasury.
as if China or India or Korea or any country for that matter didn't experience the ups and downs of economy, nationhood or empire etc

not too long ago, Chinese amas and indian guards were ubiquitous in the Philippines..am not saying that the Filipinos were rich before but until the 70s, the Philippines were up there and have a very good prospect until Marcos took power..

and China only took off beginning in the 80s..and before that, for centuries, Chinese left their homeland in search of better lives too..

its not a cycle like an economic cycle but certainly there is ups and downs..if it were not for these ups and downs, the Roman empire would still be lording over Europe, the Persians over Iran, the sub continent or even the latest one, the Soviets would still be lording over a very large swath of territories

You are like CNN, just providing facts that suit your current agenda without giving the whole picture.

Yes, income for Philipinos and Taiwanese are higher than the Chinese, but they are also much higher than people of Japanese, Korea, British, French and Swedish origin too, so “go figure" what?

Until Deng, it was China that was backward, and horribly poor. So now they are prosperous and suddenly it was always that way ? Perhaps you should count the number of party officials who have embezzled money and fled overseas. The Philippines missed out on the Asian economic miracle because of their corruption, cronyism and the colonial system they inherited from the Spanish not the US. The US influence was not overly positive but neither was it as you describe.

I would suggest you read Lee Kuan Yew's book for his intelligent, informed opinion on the subject.
People emigrate for all sorts of reason, not necessarily because they are starving to death.

And your history class needs such refreshing. The few decades of chaos before 1980 was chaotic, but at that time it was almost impossible for the Chinese to move overseas because China completely closed its doors. And prior to that, it was wars after wars, often involving multiple foreign aggressors.

Periods when China was much poorer and weak compared to the rest of Asia was actually quite short. And even today, thousands of Chinese still move not just in rich countries, but in various parts of Latin America, Africa and the middle east.

It sounds like you are connecting these two things?

The Philippines is the Philippines. Regardless if the Philippines had a rhetoric that they loved or hated the U.S., they'd still have the same problems.

It's more a connection of their belief systems...i.e. have tons of kids, as they believe that kids are their retirement plan....i.e. the FILIPINO belief (not the American one), that kids are obligated to financially support their parents for life. (Meanwhile having 8 kids and no education, continues the poverty). But they see it as a way to alleviate their poverty in their old age, regardless if all 8 kids are being exploited abroad to send money back so their parents can retire early.

That's just one example. In short, the Philippines isn't 3rd world (or 4th world) because they love or hate Americans, they are 3rd (of 4th) because the Philippines is the Philippines is the Philippines, with all their little nuances of what it means to be Filipino.

as if Chinese or any other Asian are not obligated to support their parents. didn't Confucius advocated filial piety?

seems your history begins only during the Deng Xiaoping era.

I'm not sure if you are Chinese or Filipino? But it sounds like you are Chinese.

The way that Chinese/Koreans/Japanese/etc. take care of their parents is COMPLETELY different.

Well, for one, in China, each set of parents only has one child (whereas in Japan/Korea, they might have more than one, and it is the older one that takes in the parents). I don't see anything irresponsible with that.

The Filipina way is a poor uneducated family will have 8-12 kids.....will not be able to feed or clothe or educate any of them (whereas China/Korea/Japan will SUPER educate their 1-2 kids no holds barred). The Filipino will breed a dozen kids, none of them will be educated, and then half will be practically prostituting themselves, pregnant by the time they are 20 and repeating the uneducated cycle, or being the responsible one and working abroad as a domestic helper and sending almost their entire salary back home to a large extended family who will foolishly spend the money on anything but education or bettering themselves).

You really can't compare the two cultures as remotely similar, except for that they both love their parents.

One child policy is only a recent policy, don't know if that is from Deng Xiaoping or Mao but im sure china didn't have that policy before WWII.

how did Japan have a 160M population if they have only 1 child or 2? small family is product of education or wealth. even china impose draconian measure to implement 1 child policy.

only the poor Filipinos have large family now due to ignorance

that's why I call your history begins only during the Deng Xiaoping era

Well, it sounds like you want to change the discussion to ancient history.

In this century, and most of last century, Japan has had a declining birthrate, etc.

Anyways, I'd rather keep this to our lifetimes...if we keep going back to other centuries, it'll be completely illogical to connect to the Philippines not wanting to be U.S.-centric in 2017.

i submit that if the Philippines can control its population, no matter how you naysayers thinks about Filipinos, it can rise above these problems no matter how daunting they are. if they can stop population growth, there is no need to build classrooms every year. that's just one example of the benefits of controlling the population
