That's a lot of countries visited.

Anthony Bourdain: Why Japan is his favorite travel destination - Business Insider

Quote:
Over the course of 15 years and four travel shows, Anthony Bourdain has toured 80 countries, delving into their histories and eating as much of their food as possible.

If you ask him, as Business Insider did earlier this year, what his favorite destination is, he will immediately tell you it's Japan.

"Japan is endlessly, endlessly interesting to me," he said. And even after going on nine filming trips there, "I don't think I've even scratched the surface and I don't think I ever will."

He's especially in love with Tokyo.

"If I had to eat only in one city for the rest of my life, Tokyo would be it," Bourdain wrote for CNN in 2013 on his "Parts Unknown" blog. "Most chefs I know would agree with me. For those with restless, curious minds, fascinated by layer upon layer of things, flavors, tastes and customs which we will never fully be able to understand, Tokyo is deliciously unknowable."

"It's that densely packed, impenetrable layer cake of the strange, wonderful and awful that thrills," he added. "It's mesmerizing. Intimidating. Disorienting. Upsetting. Poignant. And yes, beautiful."

I'm not surprised. Tokyo is such an energetic city, full of surprises and contrasts.

His all time greatest episode was the Tokyo episode with the robot parade.

He came to Chiang Mai and most of the show was about him going to a transvestite review. The few restaurants he chose were average at best for CM. He's a good fit for CNN....consistently misrepresenting reality. There is a Facebook group that features meals in CM but they must be under 1.40 USD....at least 50 photos of stuff that looks better than the dog ball soup he had. It often looks like he goes on a drinking binge and then does injustice to the cities' cuisine. Ironic that it is PC to endorse transvestites, but totally non PC to go to a bar and find a 25 yo real lady.

Are you talking about transvestites (guys that put a dress on) or do you mean transgenders (female-looking but were born as a boy)? Big difference you know.

Personally I am not a fan of most Japanese dishes, because I like spicy food. However some of their soups are good.

I think what sticks out the most to me about Anthony Bourdain is that he once said thst he dislikes vegetarianism because he views it as being a product of cushy, first-world insulation from real world issues and problems.

Which is an odd thing for a celebrity chef, one of the most first-world of career pursuits, to say.

(yes, I am a vegetarian)
