Chengdu is a very good choice as Botticelli mentioned ! Spicy food is the norm, with a little searching mild Mandarin style places are there too. The area has been my favorite for 15 years now. There is a US Embassy that has expat books on the city & an easy place to get work permits.

What opportunity from being a foreigner be cures teaching a foreign language? Not everyone foreigner is English native and not every English native can teach English. Also most Asian parents prefer having white teachers, not anything else when it comes to English teaching.

I meant opportunities for tutoring English outside a classroom. But, there are more and more foreign owned restaurants, cafes, breweries, etc. Mostly with food or drinks. But there are also foreign owned hotels and resorts. I even met an American guy who owned an auto shop upgrading cars.

Obviously not every foreigner is a native English speaker and yes Chinese parents prefer a white teacher, but I've met my share of black and Asian(who grew up overseas) English teachers. Again, I'm not a teacher, but most expats I met were teachers.

There are not much opportunities in most of Asia for English speaking westerners except teaching English. Most other jobs in Asia require the applicants can speak the local language.

HK people have more opportunities, not big in number, but the small number of HK people good in both English and Mandarin Chinese have lots of opportunities in Hong Kong, Mainland China and also other countries. We are able to communicate with Mainland Chinese, Taiwan people, South Asians and other nationalities in Chinese or English.

A HK girl recently made into America Got Talent. In HK, there are many people who have the interest and can sing in other languages, for example English, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

It is a good enough offer to go and have fun for awhile. Explore the country. But to have a career in China you need to go in with a different focus. You will encounter a lot of social issues if you decide to have a career in China purely as an English teacher.

Some Asian parents are just not well informed. More educated parents understand that Asians and Blacks can also be native speakers.

In fact, there are Chinese parents who prefer Chinese teachers! Chinese teachers are more experienced when it comes to how to crack the exam.
