After over 6 years of civil war, is Syria a lost nation? The Syrian president, Bashar Al-Assad has likely succeeded in keeping power for the foreseeable future and assuring his continued rule over 70% of the countries population. But, the government of Assads' Syria only has control of 20% of its territory.

The Kurds, ISIL, and Western backed rebels are all fighting eachother as well as the regime. The country is divided along ethnic and religious lines. The media available in America says that the Islamic Shia sect Alawites are in control of the regime. Yet, Alawites only account for 8-15% of the population. It seems strange that a sect so small can control a nation of nearly 25 million people, that is, prior to the civil war.

The city of Aleppo has been largely destroyed by the fighting. And the civil war has laid waste to most of the country. Over 10 million people have been displaced by the war. How does any country recover from such hellish chaos?

Lebanon is actually a good example, ending a 15 year old civil war with parliamentary elections representing all religions and factions but it's still recovering 25 years later.
But Assad isn't going anywhere, that ship has sailed years ago. It will be one of many countries (a suprising number) with rebel held provences for years to come. It may just quietly leave the headlines as Assad finally just isolates the rebel territories and rules like the monster he is the happy little 20% that he does control.

Lebanon is no longer recovering. There has been a flight ban to Lebanon for over a year now by numerous other Arab countries. Saudi Arabia stopped sending aid to Lebanon also over a year ago. As Hezbollah takes increasing control within the gov't, Lebanon may be dragged into the war in the near future.
