Interestingly despite Japan having a larger economy more tech giants reside in Taiwan with Acer, Foxconn, etc.

Why is this?

Tech giants? Acer is such a flop company that produces such mediocre PCs and Foxconn is practically a slave factory. Japan has a billion more valuable brands.

I believe Asus, Foxconn, and htc are a bigger deal today, if you go to Best Buy in the US a huge portion of the PCs are Taiwanese (another ex: msi).

Canon Nec Fujitsu are monsters...

I know what you mean, Asus or Quanta are taiwanese and very strong, and Taiwan is probably the biggest producer of electronic components in the world (Htc is not a reference at all tho...)
But IMO Japan is still here with a very strong basis of electronic products and also a strong culture of innovation, Sony and Toshiba are Titans too. Together they weight something like 20 HTCs in term of revenue.
Outside of Foxconn, Taiwan is much lighter than Japan.
Electronic industry is not only wafers and the assembly of computers for the general public .

HTC is pretty terrible.

And the days of PC have passed tbh.
