I've seen some press that Bangkok authorities will prohibit street food vendors by the end of 2017, but some other reports I've read seem to say that the goal is not to eliminate street food, but rather to "clean up" certain streets so that pedestrians can use them more. Does anyone have insider/resident info about what's really going on?

Also, I've been reading that some Night Markets have been shut down for similar reasons. Does anyone know how far this action will be taken?

Later this year I'm headed to Bangkok for a few days, and street food and night markets are big attraction for me. I'll be staying near the Silom Night Market, but I see mixed reports saying that it has--or has not-- been shut down. Does anyone know what the status is?

It won't affect your trip. I was just there last month. Bangkok and Thailand in general is fairly dominated by commerce/shopping/markets. Most Thais shop daily, if only for fresh food. You'll see plenty of great food for sale on the street and perhaps you'll understand the need for a little "clean up."

I read something last year about the Silom Night Market but I bet it is functioning mostly like always. And even if it were shut down, there are a number of other large and small markets to go to.

I got home thinking I should have bought more things (especially decorative items), they are lovely and inexpensive. Thai shop-tenders are on the pushy side, not a big deal but more often than not, they cost themselves a sale (with me anyway). Enjoy!
