Why does that matter, we are discussing the Chinese market for social media apps. When I talk to my American friends I use Facebook. In China I use Wechat. They are the best social media apps in my opinion. Wechat has a more utility purpose like using it to purchase things, but it is also a good messenger. Facebook is a good messenger and a good place to keep photos and memories. Facebook is almost like an extension of ones home, Wechat doesn't really have that same feeling.

You can assume most non Chinese wechat users use it mainly to communicate with the Chinese only.

WhatsApp is more popular in different continents.

Line's markets are mainly Japanese and Taiwanese, with some South Koreans and Hong Kong people.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but Whatsapp isn't popular from my experience. WeChat dominates, it dominates far more then Facebook dominates in the US.

Basically everyone in China has a wechat account. My parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends...all have it.

because its function is far more extensive than facebook.

What can you do with facebook? post photos and news when you are bored? Wechat is part of everyone's life nowadays, so much more than a social media.

We all know fb, thinking it is a big deal. Wechat's parent Tencent is huge. It is the 7th largest tech company in the world by market cap, larger than IBM, Intel and Cisco. As of today, it has a market cap that is 80% that of FB.
