So most Western social media apps are blocked in China but until now it seems that Whatsapp works there. But it seems that is going to change. Does anyone know if Whatsapp is widely used by people in Mainland China?

WhatsApp is being targeted by China's censors, experts say - Jul. 20, 2017

Everyone already uses WeChat, there is no need to coerce people into using wechat. I've never even heard of whatsapp. Wechat is actually pretty awesome, better then any other social media site. It's like combining facebook, uber, Apple Pay and a food delivery service. You can send money to any other user which makes transferring money super easy.

Even if it's allowed, facebook won't replace wechat, it may coexist there, but wechat is superior in almost every way especially when linked with QQ.

If American tech companies want to work in China they have to allow censorship. That's just reality, if they don't want to censor then they won't be let in.

Blown out of proportion much? Who's coercing Chinese people into using WhatsApp? Don't be ridiculous.

This is more about censorship getting worse and worse, but obviously no one in China really gives a **** so why should foreigners care? It's actually pretty awesome if you think about it. I do hope more things will be censored in China (which seems to be happening), why should the mighty sons of dragons use the evil, corrupting Western crap anyway?

Mighty sons of dragons? Really? I think that's way overstated.

The reason they censor western apps is for 2 reasons. To control content they don't like and to promote home grown technology. My point was solely based on they don't need to coerce people away from using wechat, QQ, or other Chinese social media because they are good apps. If Facebook thought they could enter China by allowing some censorship controls, I guarantee you they would and from what I've read Facebook has already developed those censorship tools and they use them in some countries, but that's not the only thing holding them back from entering the Chinese martlet. The same is true for whatsapp, google, twitter, instagram, etc.
I don't believe all censorship is bad, denying access to terrorist websites, limiting fake news, or restricting pornography isn't necessarily bad, but obviously China takes it too far.

China has a lot of well educated people who have travelled abroad. In some ways Chinese censorship does seem to be getting worse, but on the other hand, China shows lots of ways where they are opening up to the outside world more and more.

Censorship is just flat out stupid unless its material that is hateful in nature. Whether it's this incident, movies like Wonder Women or Beauty and the Beast getting banned, video game censorship in Australia, banning certain types of music in places like Iran or some censorship in the States it's all idiotic and shows high level of insecurity.

There are some pretty sick video games and movies out there. Censorship is a slippery slope, but having no censorship isn't good either. The US has some censorship as well.

agree.

But I am still glad Justin Bieber is banned in China.

As to whatsup, even if it is allowed, it has no chance of compete with wechat. Practically everyone in China from 8 to 80 uses it. And it is far better than what'sup or whatever.

I can't tolerate the fact that google is banned. I am fine with everything else.

Don't know if Whatsapp is really banned. I am contacting a friend living in Beijing quite often via Whatsapp.

But indeed there are good alternatives, the only advantage of Whatsapp is that everybody has it. I prefer Naver Line or Kakaotalk anyways.

As late as May, I still used WhatsApp to communicate with someone in China.

I really hesitate to install and use WeChat. Recently an activist from Taiwan was detained in China. It seems that he used WeChat to discuss some sensitive issues with his Chinese friends.
