Once they attained a united state under Otto Von Bismarck they have been the leading power in Europe in either military power or economy (or both).

They first defeated France why solidified their position and became the most powerful power in Europe. Then they loss WW1.

In 10-20 years they were back to number 1, then WW2

Then Western Europe some how surpassed France and Britain during the Cold War.

Now during the EU period they are considered the de facto power and leader of the EU. Can anyone stop this?

And if not why are they always able to bounce back. France seems like a much more logical leader of the EU, why don’t they take charge?

“Always lead”? Germany has only existed since 1871, and for 50 years or so they were split in half as 2 nations.

Germany is now the leader of Europe, but France has always been close in power and influence. Historically from the mid 1400’s until about 1870, France was more powerful then the Holy Roman Empire which was the collective of German States and was the most powerful nation in Europe.

Bismarck unified the German states with Prussia and when France declared war on Prussia to maintain its empire, France ultimately lost. France has never really recovered since most would consider that Frances golden period.

France was also devastated during the wars just like Germany, but France never embraced the industrial revolution like Great Britain or Germany. Western Germany really looked outwards to rebuild their country while France was embroiled in political debate with far left communist and socialist movements.
