I have a quick question to ask those with Iranian backgrounds or have friends who are Persian:

I am being invited to dinner by a Persian family (long story), and their unmarried daughter has a different last name than the mother and father. Is this some sort of Iranian family custom to have a daughter with a different last name than the rest of the family?

Thanks.

No, it is not an Iranian custom. Children receive the family name of their father. The wife keep her family name although she may be addressed by others with her husband's surname.

She may have changed her name. Is her family name Persian or anglicised?

Maybe it's a second marriage for her Mom
Maybe her dad had passed away

My friend is half Persian and she uses her Persian father's name.
There's a good chance she probably just had a different biological father and uses his last name. My step-dad raised me & I still use my real father's name.
