I have United Health Care in Tennessee.

I've been told my friend will live on a Island in the Philippines.

Anyone else have a chuckle at that point

In general people think of Metro Manila, another regional hub city or the provinces

There are over 7000 islands so that does not narrow it down at all. your healthcare will likely not work there, best to check with them

The problem may be more cultural than financial. I guess you have zero ties to the Philippines, does your friend? Like family, served there before the bases closed, another friend settled, etc. Or do the Philippians just sound better than Nicaragua, with their current violence or other retirement locations at the moment

With no disrespect to the Philippines I donít know why someone with a middle class lifestyle in the US would want to retire there. If youíre really super well off and can afford living in an expat gated community and pay for private premium healthcare it might be a good idea.

Cost of living in the Philippines can be deceptive. If you can live like a local Filipino then it will be less. If you want to live like a middle class American with American lifestyle, it will cost more. Some things that are more expensive in the PH is electricity, new and used cars(Toyota, Honda), imported groceries, new condos, electronics, western clothes, and American chain restaurants. My min comfortable budget is $3000 per month in a major city, and $2000 elsewhere.

Exactly. For a lot of people it's better to just retire in place. Some, not all, expats put up with the disadvantages to play White Knight and exploit disadvantaged very young Filipinas with no good economic future.

Poor infrastructure. Pollution and monumental traffic congestion in places like Manila. Trash everywhere. There are many stories of old Americans retiring there on Social Security and small savings and going broke.

Is the plan to run a resort part time? Or perhaps just live off of investments?
