I am not surprised. The Japanese seem to take hint of Chinese, Korean, and a great many other cultures where royals and nobility as a rule do not marry commoners. I am not surprised if the royal family themselves put a temporary stop to the marriage. In olden times, they simply could have told the boy to get lost and don't come near the princess again but nowadays because of so much social media they have to be more careful and take things slowly.
