How easy or hard is it for Mainland Chinese to get the visa and paperwork to travel to Taiwan?

Is it as easy for them as getting the visa to travel to Hong Kong or Macau or much harder?

How about obtaining permanent residency status compared to Hong Kong/Macau?

Everyone wants tourist dollars, so the visa is easy.

Getting permanent residency in Taiwan is very hard for mainland Chinese but pretty easy for all other nationalities.

nobody from mainland wants to live permanently in Taiwan. The immigration is from Taiwan to Mainland, not vice versa

I don't know about "pretty easy." It took me five years, lots of paperwork and a squeaky clean past and bill of health to get my APRC in Taiwan. My wife, on the other hand, got her U.S. green card in less than a year.

That's because it's very easy for Taiwanese to travel and stay almost indefinitely in the mainland, while it's almost impossible for mainland Chinese to stay long-term in Taiwan.

And no one immigrates to China either, unless they've got family there (waishengren). The emigration rate of Taiwan is pretty low and North America and Australia are pretty much the only popular destinations.

Well your wife obviously was very lucky. There are people we've waited 20 years and still didn't receive their green card.

Green card via marriage has no waiting line, so as long as the applicstion is approved, its 1-2 years tops. Green cards via other means can take a minimum of 7 years.
