India doesn't really have right-wing news outlets so I guess this applies to all outlets regardless of political lean. This concerns the following news story:

http://www.indiatoday.in/india/story...563-2018-08-24

Quote:
The Hindus worship the cow as sacred texts such as Vedas, Smritis, Srutis and Puranas talk about the virtues of the humble animal. It is thought that 33 crore Hindu deities are home to a cow.
This is absolutely incorrect and fake news.

Hinduism doesn't actually afford any special status to the cow at all - in fact, it was actually the Buddha that afforded the cow a higher status. It was also the Buddha that convinced so many Hindus to become vegetarians (but I'll leave the meaning of Hinduism to another day...).

Despite the ridiculously huge anti-Hindu anti-Islamophobic movement sweeping the UK, even Oxford University Press published comments to the following:

Quote:
First, the ban on cattle slaughter is part of the general doctrine of ahimsa, causing no hurt to living beings. It is not only cattle that are protected by ahimsa, but other animals as well.
http://books.google.co.in/books?id=4RQRAQAAIAAJ

The cow protection movement is nothing to do with Hinduism theologically. It's also widespread in Sri Lanka were it's gotten further in that sale for cow slaughter is basically banned throughout the island - despite it being Buddhist. There is nothing in Hinduism that talks about the cow as being anything more special than the myriad of animals found in Hinduism. It's status in Indian society is about culture.

Cows are liked in the same way western countries like dogs. In many countries around the world, dogs aren't seen as anything special, but many places in the west particularly forbids the slaughter of dogs and many charitable animal welfare organisations focus on dogs and certain household pets.

Obviously, the majority of left-wing news outlets in the West have been following the same anti-Hindu anti-Indian pro-Middle-Eastern line that Indian news outlets love to follow.

Utter nonsense, getting your udder in a twist. The article says that Hindus consider cows to be sacred. While you obviously disagree, what makes it anti-Hindu? Part of an anti-Hindu anti-Indian pro-Middle-Eastern line? Huh...

I am not going to debate the historical origins of the sacredness of the cow but in the current times there clearly is a right-wing Hindu fundamentalist strand that is pushing this very aggressively and there have been plenty of lynchings of people in possession of real or alleged cow meat. There are groups such as the following: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhartiya_Gau_Raksha_Dal

Such things are of / should be of greater concerns than debating the historical antecedents of the sacredness of the cows or getting worked up on a perfectly reasonable, if poorly edited news story from a mainstream Indian publication.

Is it fake news because it's incorrect or fake news just because you don't agree with it?

Most news on the cheap is like most food on the cheap: junk

Most so-called "news" outlets are purveyors of advertising and agendas.

Real news to me is what is going on within my personal sphere and business, including market prices, which tell a much more accurate story of the world than any cheap "news" outlet.

You get what you pay for.
