What is your favorite Southeast Asian country, and why? And what is your least favorite Southeast Asian country, and why?

As a Southeast Asian, I'd like to see your opinion on this topic. Any one of you on this board who has been to any of the 11 countries in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) is welcome to chime in on this question! If you have been to multiple countries in the region, that's even better for this discussion thread. Thanks...

My family is from Malaysia and Singapore and I have been to both many times, so my response is very much swayed by that. Highest factors for me are quality of a modern and somewhat "western" lifestyle + amenities, and a variety of cities and environments (which is the only reason Singapore isn't at the top). Smaller factors of consideration are sizable Chinese populations, COL, and family and friends locations.

My ranking of the places I have been to:

1) Malaysia
2) Singapore
3) Thailand
4) Philippines
5) Indonesia

My guess for some of the places I have not been to is that Vietnam and then Cambodia would rank below Philippines and above Indonesia.

What makes Vietnam your least favorite in the list? Which Vietnamese cities did you visit?

I've been to all of them except Brunei & East Timor.

It's hard to say 'least favorite' and 'most favorite.' I've liked ALL of them, and they are all worth going to. Sometimes I go places and I don't care for it, but I visit again, and really like it the next time. So much depends on your personal mood and situation and who you meet and what you do.

Some of those countries I would put at the very top of my list one year, and later I have such a great time in a few others, that the one near the top falls down to the middle.

In short, you really can't go wrong anywhere in Southeast Asia. It's kind of like saying 'what's your favorite 'midwestern state?'. You could make an argument that Iowa is better than Minnesota or whatever, but at the end of the day, if you like one of them, you'll probably like the other just the same.

None of them really. If have to choose then Singapore, but that's a default choice.

I visited Thailand a few years ago in the winter and I really enjoyed my trip.

Never been to other SE Asian countries, though.

Who in the right mind would like the Midwest?

Southeast Asia is more culturally and ethnically diverse than the Midwest.

Politically, I hate the communism so I am less interested in Vietnam. Singapore isn't free world either.

Thailand is by far my favorite for several reasons:
1. I prefer Buddhism culture, even though I'm an atheist.
2. Thailand seems to be safer than most other SE Asian countries.
3. Thailand seems to be more tolerant. They are doing much better when it comes to human rights. Indonesia is known for the massacre of ethnic Chinese.
4. Food is awesome.

Economically, Singapore is the only developed country on the list. For academic/business opportunities, it's definitely the best of all. But as a tourist, I have no interest.
