It is actually not particularly hard to obtain Japanese citizenship, compared to other East Asian countries.
It is just difficult to get the permanent residency without changing citizenship.
In other words: Muslims from "liberal countries" like Indonesia, Saudi Arabia etc instead of Asian or white immigrants from say eastern europe.
No wonder China and Korea are easily surpassing Japan these days.
I noticed many foreigners living in Japan are more appreciative of traditional Japanese culture than many native born, especially the young. They not only speak fluent Japanese, but have a good knowledge and appreciation of its history and culture. They've fully assimilated and either married locals, or brought in highly specialized work expertise and opened businesses, usually in conjunction with a local. These would fall under the traditionally desirable immigrant class.
This bill is for blue collar workers. I know Japan draws heavily from surrounding poorer Asian countries to fill these jobs via their (frequently abused) trainee programs. I understand many immigrants from all over the world also work in service type jobs, like the restaurant industry. I guess either the robotics technology is not ready yet, or they've decided it is unsuitable for certain jobs that still require humans.
It will be interesting to see how Japan approaches this labor shortage via immigration problem in the long term, as compared to Western countries. Being an island chain nation, they have more control over their borders, so more control over the quality of their immigrants via illegal immigration.
Japan is ten times more immigrant-friendly than the U.S, lol.
How so? Over 13% of the population in the US is foreign born. Around 2% of the population in Japan is foreign born. What is Japan doing with regards to immigration that you think is far superior to the US? BTW, I'm an American who has lived in Japan.
