Is it advisable to rent a car in Thailand if you plan to stay for more than a week and visit the north of country and the beaches? Will be landing in Bangkok. How can you get around?
Driving is nuts. This is a great bus company up North...Mercedes busses..VIP..pretty cheap...so are trains, taxis, and planes...Thai Vietjet is awesome, too.

There is no need to drive a car - even if you stay in Thailand for a year.
There are very efficient mini-vans, taxis, Ubers, and buses for short, medium, and longer journeys.
It's very easy to drive in Chiang Mai but sort of difficult in Phuket. Phuket has a lot of hills and sharp turns. I even witnessed one crash in Phuket during my short stay there.
The cost isn't cheap, especially by Thailand standard. I believe I paid around 50 USD per day for a Corolla. I chose to rent a car because I didn't bother to deal with unscrupulous taxi drivers. Economically, maybe it's not the best idea though.
What is the easiest way to get from Bangkok to the south of the country like Phuket or to Chiang Mai up north ? Motorcycle or bus?
I used to rent motorcycles, Honda 350, and ride from Sattahip to BKK, but not really go into the city. Too scary. If you're going to be in the city for several days, hire a driver and his car for the duration and agree on a fee/price.
