I will disagree about Japan and the Forgotten War. Throughout the war the US treated the North Korean and even the later Chinese offensives as a feint and keep the bulk of its organized reserves ready to go to Germany and take on the Soviets while depending upon less well trained and less experienced recent draftees. The other national contingents sent to join the UN forces besides two British Divisions were a brigade here and a battalion there.

The hot war only lasted a few years and we are in 2018 still going after 100 year old Nazis where we can find them, even after 40 years of cold war and fortress West Germany. With the big bad being the Soviets and that line in the Federal Republic of Germany if it was for bases for the grand war against communism then the German people and their yet to be proven Nazis and not the Japanese would have been the ones forgiven

The biggest factor is the Eurocentric view among Americans, included Americans who write history books. It's not only atrocities committed by Japan in WWII but pretty much everything else that's taught in American history books is focused much more on Europe, where most Americans can trace their ancestry, than any other part of the world. Why would it be any different when discussing a world war? Some may also debate that the crimes of Germany were worse and better documented than Japan. If anything, I'd say those were smaller factors when compared to Eurocentrism among Americans.

I, for one, am tortured by your numerous grammatical mistakes which, for some reason, are appearing all over CD.

Students in western countries learn very little about Far East history anyway.

Very few Americans can correctly name 5 Chinese cities or 3 Japanese cities without searching on line.
A few years ago many cannot even name the capital of China.

There was also an intelligence gaffe in the US. US Naval codebreakers broke into several of the Japanese Empire codes, & we used the information to guide US forces in the Pacific. One of the Chicago papers broke the story (from Congressional debate? I forget the details), & Japan switched codes, blinding the intel intercepts.

Also, as the war looked increasingly bleak for Japan, they destroyed a lot of military & other official records & paperwork (or secreted them inland), even as they prepared to defend Japan to the last civilian. For those reasons, it was very difficult to convict Japanese officers & high IJ government officials of crimes. & Japan negotiated for trades - swapping out weaponized germ research to the US for some immunities from prosecution.

& yes, the bombing & especially the firebombing campaign in IJ destroyed a lot of homes & workshops. Between hunger/starvation, exposure, disease - loss of power & transportation (most of the bombing targets were the large urban centers on the coasts - which also concentrated infrastructure, factories, comms, hospitals, schools, etc.), we killed or indirectly killed & injured a lot of Japanese.

Default China can absorb a lot more hits than Japan can

Japan v. China? The Chinese have the manpower advantage, a massive modern military, & a cohesive government this time. I think the Chinese would prevail, given their burgeoning economy & the resources they're putting to their military. China is increasingly gaining economic heft in the World, & they seem determined to act the part - think the US' international behavior after WWII ended, up until 1975 CE or so.

Which is why Japan is looking to build/buy their first carrier naval craft since WWII. Japan is increasingly looking to bolster its own military spending & armed forces, as they realize the US may not be reliable in international deterrence.

I think it was Bradley in The China mirage : the hidden history of American disaster in Asia /James Bradley 1954- author, Little Brown & Company, c2015, 327.51 BRAD - who states that T. Roosevelt basically gave away Korea to the Japanese Empire back when. Apparently he (TR) had a good feeling about Imperial Japan - they reminded him of the US when we were on the make in the 1840s CE, he felt he could cut a deal with them. & so, rather than protecting Korea (which had appealed to the US as a good-faith broker of peace between IJ & Korea), he sold them out, to the tender mercies of IJ.

Later, when the US was marking which countries would be protected by the US in the international sphere, we failed to include S. Korea in the list. N. Korea, China, & the USSR took note, & the Korean civil war reopened & went into extra rounds. (Also noted in the same book, I think.)

Honestly how many white civilians died compared to the opposite? Few white civilians died under Japanese watch (with some exceptions like the Dutch in Indonesia but honestly those guys were racist colonists and they deserved the war crimes the Japanese gave inflicted on them). I am not very sympathetic to the "victims" in Bataan either since 20 years priors they tortured and murdered over a million Filipinos and occupied a foreign land. Quite frankly, it's a sick joke that the Bataan Death March pretty much erased the American genocide in the Philippines and turned those "victims" into heroes.
