I was unfortunate enough to spend one weekend in La Defense (cheaper hotels). It was like a ghost town at night.
It's been 10 years since I've been to Singapore, and I don't even remember if I even visited the CBD (most likely not).
We stayed at La Defense €22 for a total 3 nights with fantastic breakfast. What’s not to like.
I booked through some British website, 2006 time frame I believe, must be much more expensive now.
Singapore's Central Business District is just like La Defense: both sterile and devoid of life/culture with things to do just outside the district
Uh, what about Singapore's Chinatown? Right across the street from the CBD? Or Marina Bay Sands? Lau Pa Sat? Boat Quay? Singapore Flyer? Gardens by the Bay?
Want a downtown that's actually devoid of life? Try Downtown Los Angeles. Close to nothing.

Compared to Singapore’s CBD? Sure. But compared to other US city downtowns, it’s pretty great.

La Defense has underway quite a few more residential units and hotels in addition to its large office mix currently, so it might not be long before it’s fairly well attended at night. It’ll still be a large night and day difference though. When were you last in La Defense?

March 2014. Or was it 2015? It's all blurry now lol.

These are adjacent to CBD. The actual CBD is sterile and dead on non working days like weekends and nights. Along the water, it's lively since food halls and restaurants are there.
Actually, Downtown L.A is vibrant these days. It's changed a lot since 5 years with all those new high rises, restaurants and shops located there. It's still work in progress, though.

Was there in 2 years ago: soooo deeead at nights and weekends.
Most people just kind of stay away from Singapore's CBD but marvel at its skyline. Some people would stay at hotels in CBD but venture outside when they explore the city. There are things to do very close to CBD and along the waterfront but not much in the heart of CBD. Reminds me of La Defense. I was surprised since I do like the skyline of the city. However, there was stunningly nothing there: very sterile. The colonial lowrise, homes were interesting to look at in the back of the CBD.
