Do people in Asia eat as many rice dishes as we see in American movies and American versions of Asian restaurants? Also, have any of you tried Cajun rice dishes? I’m from south Louisiana and much of our food has rice. Jambalaya, Gumbo, Etouffee, boudin, red beans and rice, and even breakfast of eggs and rice are all common dishes here.

There are many rice dishes in Asia, far more than you can see in American movies and Asian restaurants in the US. In most of Asia, rice is the staple food and is an important part of the culture. Most Asian languages have different words for cooked rice and uncooked rice. It's also not uncommon for Asians to eat rice in every meal. It's most commonly consumed in the form of white rice (aka steamed rice or plain rice), but there are many dishes in every Asian country. Commonly found in the US include Yangchow fried rice, sushi, and bibimbap. In addition, rice can be made into rice wine, rice noodles, rice crackers, rice paper, etc.

Yes, have eaten jambalaya, rice and beans, gumbo, etc.

When I was in the Navy we had a cook on the ship who was from Louisiana. He saw there was leftover rice from the night before so he put it out on the breakfast line. The other cooks looked at him like he was crazy. Those of us from south Louisiana got the rice. We then got the fried eggs on top of the rice. We sat at the table together with a bottle of hot sauce. Crew members of Asian ancestry also joined us at the table with eggs and rice. We passed around the hot sauce and ate while others looked at us like we were crazy. The rice we eat in south Louisiana is also the white rice.

This article with photos should give you an idea how much our Cajun culture is tied to rice. These are photos and family stories all having to do with a Hitachi Chime-o-matic rice cooker so very common here in the 1970s & 80s. All my relatives had one in their kitchen and we all have fond memories of waiting for that “ding” to know it’s time to get ready to eat.
