Was walking thru the Glodok (Chinatown) area of Jakarta just a couple of months ago. A music store had speakers on the street and was playing Johnny Cash singing "Burning Ring of Fire." There is something about Johnny Cash that is nearly universal. I've heard his music in other public places in Asia.

A funny incident: I was at a train station in Bandung, Indonesia not too long ago. A lady was entertaining the crowd: she had a microphone and some speakers. An Indonesian guy, just waiting for the train like me, reaches into his suitcase and pulls out some sheet music and walks over to her and whispers something in her ear. She shrugs and hands him the microphone. He launches into a soulful but barely recognizable rendition of Ray Charles's "I can't Stop Loving You." The crowd was laughing but in a good natured way and snapping pictures, videos etc. Now that may not be "country" per se, but close enough.
