Not even a comparison NY is ten times the city of Dubai cultural, density, wealth every thing about ny overshadows Dubai they might have some nice buildings but there skyline is crap. And i hate how people think Dubai has a better skyline than NY and Chicago just cause dubai has the burj. And dubai was a small wasteland like 15 years ago so i dont think it has culture either when like most the people arent even native born to the area that occupai the city.

Think about it beyond the mere superficial. People are attracted to New York because of many other reasons. Dubai has little to offer culturally. Unlike how Dubai is often described on forums like this one it's essentially Arab with very significant Iranian investments and Persian influence. Long-term, I think Dubai is only special to people from poorer third world countries. It's not as special to someone from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. I seriously doubt Dubai is sustainable.

New York is a great city.. i love it, but i think dubai will see the biggest shot of growth for now.
It jumped from 1,204,000 in december of 2005 to 2,262,000 in March of 2008 to me thats a crazy sign of growth..something NYC hasnt seen in decades, Dubai has a bright future ahead IT HAS ONLY BEGUN,

Home to the tallest building in the WORLD, Burj Dubai... 160 stories
Has gained the title of "The City of Cranes" for a reason!

DUBAI BABY!

Dubai, and the entire region is doing great these days, however, what most are overlooking is that most of the new development is dependant on the west, in particuar the United States' oil imports. What would happen if the the west/US cut it's imports by 50%, or so? I doubt you' see many more islands being built, or new cities going up overnight.

You cannot create a great city overnight, it takes decades. Also, with the constant stream of people entering, and leaving anually, what culture would you end up with? The great cities of the world were created by people, not business. New York, Paris, Rome, London, etc., are not beholden to any one type of business. Let the oil dry up, so will Dubai.

I thnik you will find that dubai is planned more as a detination resort much like Las Vegas and most of the houisng is planned for workers. Destinations resort areas can be created overnite.
