I am in the Navy and getting transferred to Japan soon. I have visited there growing up since I have relatives that live there, but I haven't been back in almost 10 years. From what I remember, it was a safe country where you didn't have to worry about crime as much as in the United States (especially in Atlanta where I grew up). Is that still the case today or has it changed since then?

Yeah its pretty much completely safe unless you are female. In that case you have to worry about creepy guys who will steal your unwear off the line or try to cop a feel on a crowded subway.

Not that much in the way of street crime over there like we are accustomed to here in America. If anything Japanese usually view foreigners, including Americans such as yourself, as a source of crime in their country.

There are stories of people getting their wallets back from the Tokyo subway. I think you are OK.

Japan is an extremely safe country to live in. I don't think you have anything to really worry about. What ARE you worried about?

Most Japanese really don't care what or who you are, unless you're a celebrity...or TRYING to get attention. They usually mind their own business.

Unfortunately MEAD is correct...it's widely known in the urban areas that pervs to lurk the area. However if you are indeed a female, there are Female only trains.

It also depends on what part of Japan you're going to. If you're in the Navy...lets see yokosuka, Sasebo? Okinawa? Okinawa is pretty far (distance and culturally-wise)...

Thanks for the responses! I'm really looking forward to going back out there. Hopefully living in a more peaceful society will help mellow me out.

Now that I am back here, I can say it is safe and nice just as I remember it. I haven't yet felt unsafe anywhere since I got here 2 months ago. Unfortunately, there have been a lot of incidents involving U.S. Military members, such as Okinawa rapes and the Yokosuka taxi driver murder case.

From what I hear, people leave their doors unlocked sometimes.

It is a safe place, even at night. Even walking the streets in the wee hours of the night, I felt safe.

Love it there... really hope I can move there and find a job.

Crime in Japan has rised recently, mainly due to drunk foreigners who engage in fights, and also because of the increase of South American and Russian population

Japan is an example of why diversity isn't exactly great.

The Japanese value their race, culture, and homogeneous population.

And in doing so they've built a successful, first-world nation-state with a great educational and welfare system. (Socialist Scandinavia is another example similar to Japan... except that their crime rate has been rising due to the importation of a 'foreign element').

Europe, the U.S, and other countries should take a hint from Japan.
