CIA World Factbook has outdated info. 75% of people in Kazakhstan are Asians (Kazakh mostly). Culturally they are rather unique - a mix between Asian and Russian culture. Urban Kazakhs are more like Russians, I guess.

Environmental problems are finally being dealt with (maybe because the country is moving towards democracy). But you better avoid food grown in Kazakhstan.

Go onto Amazon.com or your local BarnesandNoble. Look for a book entitled "Kazakhstan" published by the Bradt Travel Guide Series. The author is Paul Brummell. It is a detailed 400 pages travel guide to the country but with extensive background information...more than you will find on wikipedia. I strongly recommend that you purchase this book before leaving.

I live overseas and have found this website to be a good, practical place to get information about countries. Overseas Expat Life from Tales from a Small Planet

I lived in Central Asia for five years and enjoyed it. Kazakhstan has beautiful nature, with bits of environmental devastation. When you get there, ask about the "Red Book," which lists the protected species (if they've kept it up from Soviet times.)
