Maybe someday this will be the US?! A female, atheist President. One can dream, right?
That would be AWESOME! I'd especially love to see the conservative religious right crying in the street afterwards screaming "it's the end of the world!!!!"
Well Julia Gillard is not the first Athiest prime minister of Australia. The first one was Bob Hawke who was PM during the 1980s. Bob Hawke parents were ministers I think.

I think it is wonderful that the people of Australia are enlightened enough to elect an atheist Prime Minister.
Julia Gillard was not elected by the Australian people for Prime Minister. Her party got together to get rid of the previous leader. Anyway according to polls if there is an election held today she would win the election. The election will happen in a few months time here.
The first Athest Prime minister was Bob Hawke in the 1980s and he was elected 3 times as this country has no limit of terms where they can be elected unlike it where in the US the limit for an term is 2 times.
New Zealand and Australia, along with a few European countries are definitely more irreligious than the US. Religion just isn't as important in politics and it is not a defining factor of the culture.
Just because a politician is not religious however, does make them anymore honest or ethical. Politicians by nature are scumbags. The difference essentially is in the political system and how it is run. The US system is open to corruption because of lobbyists and the fact money can influence decisions.
