I highly doubt there's a literal genetic link with atheism or theism for that matter. I would be more inclined to say that it's a part of the human condition to seek answers to difficult subjects (in general). For some people "god did it" is an acceptable answer while the rest of us go further and question the validity of that answer only to conclude that "god did it" doesn't make any sense... at all.

I think religion offers comfort and certainty in a world where it's hard to find. Maybe that's why it's so damn integrated into the human race. We're naturally inclined to accept a perceived comfort while atheist are ready and willing to see past the BS and want to face the world in it's raw, unaltered form. To me that's what atheism and agnosticism offers, unaltered truth. We see things for what they are, not what a book or an establishment want us to see.
