Default Stats on Atheism?

I didn't scan the entire Atheism board but didn't see any posts on statistics on Atheism. I am not sure if the government keeps track of the U.S. population's religious affiliations but I am interested if anyone knows where to look?

I'm interested in the percentage of atheist population in the U.S.'s big cities, along with different states. I've found from some Googling that Vermont apparently has the highest (self-report) percentage of atheists.

Any suggestions?

Try Googling for religious statistics by percentage.
