Why does the alleged creator of the universe have to be a who? Why does it have to be a being? What if the creator of the universe (if any) is a what? I find it shortsighted that most people attribute the creation of the universe to be the product of a being. Why does all natural matter have to have been created by a being of some type? Has anyone else thought of this?

'Because God was created in the image of man' is the best answer.

I agree. You may also notice the current western thought imagined bearded white guy in the sky is directly related to another bearded white sky-guy from a culture that had A LOT of influence on the Western world:
Today's Western "god" is really just a cleaned up version of Jupiter mixed with Judaism's god as an omnipresent force. A 100+ years ago, that god was an angry bastard who regularly punished folks with cold stinky outhouses, dirty water, poor hygiene and lousy child mortality rates.
Of course, now that life is clean, mostly easy and pleasant and death isn't such a common thing, god is a fluffy warm fellow full of love.
So has god gone hippy? Or, does a society decide what god is, based on a more real interpretation of the circumstances that society finds itself?
It's fairly easy to "connect the dots" between epochs and cultures to see how religious ideas evolved over time. It's also amazing to me how people still believe them....

This thinking is somewhat biased, Chango . . . you don't follow the evolution of our physical attributes and say "it amazes you" we still have appendixes . . . or do you? On the contrary . . . the evolution of our spiritual attributes should foster amazement that we haven't "out-evolved" them. IF they were not an essential part of humankind they would not still be a part of humankind.

Seeing The Obvious
And yet that part is fading, at least in the more educated and less fearful societies. Islam is on the rise; Christianity is on the decline.

Agreed. Not to say there is not a supreme being, but yes man did create this god and religion. All religions were created by man, and things created by man are usually flawed. Like machines, they break and we fix them.
