I struggled through Dawkins' "The God Delusion"... not that it was bad, but that I am lacking in knowledge to the point where it was a difficult read for me.
Hitchens, on the other hand, is more at my reading level. Someone before said he came across as arrogant, but I just see it as his gosh-honest view of the religious world.
Being raised Christian, it is hard for me to change my thinking to view my former religion as any less poisonous as the others. So much of what we do in American society is centered around Christian principles. I had no idea how much of an influence the Church has over us! I used to just accept it that everyone else was just like me and that the Christian belief was equated with being a good ole American. Now I can see how it is no different than other dangerous theocracies throughout the world.
I think Godless by Dan Barker is probably the easiest read while being intelligent, entertaining, and giving a solid foundation for atheist apologetics.
Here are some excellent links for those who would like to learn more.
I actually thought The God Delusion was more informative, whereas God is Not Great is just an endless rant on how religion is bad. I agree that Godless was a good read too. One of my favorites was Atheist Universe by David Mills, actually. It's very easy reading and straightforward and to the point.
Wow! Thanks you guys for all the great reading suggestions. This is all pretty much new to me, so I'm not on the up-and-up of all the good atheist books.
Hitchens and Dawkins both have been on my "to-do" list for some time. That's why I chose them first.
I read God is Not Great before I read the others. THe subtitle is How Religion Poisons Everything or something like that . I have no problem with religion-basjhing, I was expecting more of a deistic view though because it went from pointing out the evils of religion, with which I agree, to almost promoting a self-styled type of atheism on par with the Christians "If you don't agree exaclty with me on everything then you are wrong" Leaves no room for any personal spiritual growth or ideals.
I really think Dan Barker is a quality famous atheist. Unlike other famous atheists, he comes across as warm, friendly and is a great communicator. And he actually smiles often. I rarely see Hitchens or Dawkins ever smile.

I don't think I'd be smiling much either if I got as much hate mail or as many death threats as they do.
But thanks, I'll go check out Barker.
