I believe that what was meant to happen, will happen, and that has nothing to do with God.

The broader question is, do you accept cause and effect. If things occur because of a cause, a powerful logic, then everything must be pre-determined.

Of course it is. Eventually I will grow old and die. This is normal.
And in all the time from birth to death, the individual is in control* of the path taken, including the side trips and and detours.

*The one time I had little to no control was not due to any god's predetermination, but the governments predetermination of where and what I was to due during my tour of duty in Uncle Sams canoe club.

If you accept the theories (loosely that at best) of the current quantum model it is fundamentally not possible to know. Second, Schroedingers cat means observing said effects would inherently change them so its sort of a moot point.

I think it should be noted that there is a difference between 'everything is determined' and 'you can know the future'

What do you mean "meant to happen"? Doesn't that imply that something gave the happening meaning (or intent)?

Not to me. I believe in determinism.

Everything that happens is predetermined, there is no free will, only the illusion of free will.

I wanted to see what you all thought about this issue and all of your answers are very good. Thanks.

I believe my error was thinking our brains are just a bunch of atoms bouncing around. I haven't had a class in Physics for over 40 years, but from what I hear, reality is more than just atoms moving in a three-dimensional universe. There are other sub-atomic particles, or concentrations of energy, and all kinds of forces.

Anyway, I think I have free will, even if my actions always do seem very predictable.

I know that one, I was one of the armed guards for the canoe club.

I think we have free will within limits which are predetermined by experience and what we take from it, genetics, environment, etc.
