When you read about the lunatic fringe of Christianity it scares me 100x more than any fringe Muslim element. Religion is truly the worst convention man ever invented.

Right, it was militant Christians that took down the World Trade Center. Get a grip...

I think atheism is a very funny belief. To think that the universe just created itself out of nothing, with no intelligent design, is hilarious, in my opinion.

Get a clue. Atheism isn't a belief and your last statement doesn't make any sense.

Not as hilarious as thinking that an 'intelligent designer' created the universe out of nothing.

BTW, it's only theists that think the universe was created from 'nothing'.

I would find such willful ignorance rather humorous, if not for the fact that the majority of the people in our society are afflicted with such levels of stupidity based solely on a single book of ancient superstitions, and so poorly written that even those that believe it cannot even come close to agreement as to what it says.

Two things are infinite, as far as we know - the universe and human stupidity. ~Albert Einstein

Well, there are many who share that view . However, if you wished to understand our rationale we would be only too glad to explain and show that it is belief in a God - created and intelligently designed universe which is actually not a logical or rational position and agnostic atheism is in fact the rational position.

Assuming that you accept the general meaning and rules of logical rationality. Not every theist does, apparently.

Does anyone else get frustrated by this fact?

If you don't want your ideas to be questioned and rediculed (in the case of religion and a god), then either 'smart up' and don't come up with fairytales as your truths and your reality, or keep it to yourself, and don't go around saying "the good lord this....and the good lord that..."

Ticks me off i tell ya!

I used to be a Christian until I got to an age where I asked myself why am I blindly following a religion just because my parents say too ? This lead me to no longer claim "Iím a Christian" because I truly never was, just was going to church because I had too, it all wasn't logical to me. My question to you is WHY do you care that others religion isnít logical or doesn't add up? Let them be delusional! The thing about most Christians (I can only speak for Christians not any other religions because I went to a Christian church, also these are my experiences so donít freak out) is they like reactions or for people to be interested in what theyíre saying! The man who holds a sign up saying youíre going to hell if you donít believe in god I will look at the sign briefly as I drive by but donít feel a need to roll down my window and curse him out, or tell him god isnít real I could care less! I'm on my way to work, going to make money. In a car with A/C instead he is outside of Virginal Beach Blvd. making no money, sweating like a hog walking around with his sign! Please donít waste your time trying to convince others by debating with them, what will you achieve from this?

Are we on topic...yes we are. Thanks for your post and the smilies.

VA CollegeStudent writ: "don’t waste your time trying to convince others by debating with them, what will you achieve from this?"

I ask myself that question regularly. In a former forum I had the sig 'The truth is important'.

In a world where the only meaning is what we hold to be meaningful, the truth is indeed important. It is important to me and I have to believe it is important to others. There are very few theists who, while admitting that they have Faith, would be happy to admit that there was nothing to support their beliefs but Faith. They may find faith helpful in plastering over a few doubtful patches in the body of evidence that supports their Faith but they do (like all of us) want to believe that their beliefs are supported by a reasonable amount of fact.

That it is demonstrable that all this 'Fact' is a concoction of tosh privatim et seriatem, is enough to make a lot of us feel convinced that the true facts have to be placed before the public simply in order that they are in a position to decide on the basis of ALL the facts, not just those which a college of churches with incomes to protect are minded to provide.

But that is not the only reason. It would be neccessary to do that even if churches just carried out their activities behind closed doors, but they do not or religion does not - it involves itself in every aspect of life - law, politics, education, medicine, media and blast it, it even wants to interfere in science.

It comes knocking on my door, it hands out tracts in the street, it expects people to pour in the door to praise God for a national tragedy. It wants more and more influence and control over peoples' lives, not less.

While we should know by now that you can't get through with reasoned argument to those who are not listening, I have to believe that there are a lot out there who are. They have doubts and questions. They want to hear the case for either side. This forum is just one of the many outlets where the best arguments for each side are made.

It is absolutely necessary that we do this.
