Pete Stark, the only admitted atheist in Congress, said there were other atheists in Congress of both political parties but they did not want to make their atheism public for fear of alienating voters. The late California Congressman Tom Lantos (D-San Francisco) was most likely an atheist - he'd said that his Jewish identity was cultural rather than tied to the Jewish religion, and he did say religion was unimportant in his life. If he came out as an atheist he probably wouldn't have lost too many votes considering what city he represented. I could understand Republican atheists staying "closeted", although Republicans are starting to cite Ayn Rand as a heroine of theirs, and Rand was a very militant atheist. The last agnostic president, William Howard Taft, was a conservative Republican who publically stated he did not believe in Jesus Christ but still won his party's nomination and the presidency. Other conservative atheists of the past included Robert Ingersoll (very close to McKinley), H.L. Mencken, and Leo Strauss. (Yes, I know Taft belonged to a church for social reasons, just like Strauss belonged to a synagogue for social reasons as well as putting up a front - Strauss was very heavily into Machiavelli....)

So then, about half people in the United States would rather have someone as commander and chief of the military who believes that, after a nuclear war we'd go to a happy place where we could see all our old friends and relatives, than someone who believes we'd just be dead?

Or, equally as scary, "there is no reason to take any action to slow global warming, as God promised never to flood the earth again."

History has revealed time and again that those who mix myth with policy end up producing disaster.
