It would be nice to know some other characterists than that he or she is an atheist, but yes, why not. It'd be a positive characteristic. Then again, this is only one positive characteristic and should not be the deciding factor. There are too many people who voted for Hillary primarily because she was a woman (or against her for that reason) or for Obama because he's black (or against him for that reason) or Rick Perry because he's a devout theist. (Note that I'm not categorizing voting against him because he's such a devout theist as a negative decision in this case, because he's a little frightening...but of course that shouldn't be the sole deciding factor.)

He's "a little frightening" partly because of the nature of his devout theism.

An atheist President would be a welcome change, but that will be far in the future if it ever occurs.

agreed the fickle mob in this country just voted based on religion, race, male/female, etc. instead of knowing what the actual candidate and person is all about...which is how we ended up with a good talker in the white house and nothing more

A rational human being who doesn't cling to fairy tales?

No way they could govern THIS country.

I wouldn't vote for anyone dumb enough that he identifies himself by his disbelief in God.

How sadly true. I would never vote or such an openly theistic prez candidate like Perry, since it's obvious (to me at least...) that he's of that theistic "bent" where he truly wants to insert theism wherever he, as POTUS, could (via school prayer, the addition of Creationism into high-school science curricula, the mention of God in all his speeches, and so on..).

Such blatant non-secularism is truly irritating to us devout atheists. Imagine if we were to insist on equal-time atheism, as when he might say, at the close of a speech, "...and God Bless America!", he'd also have to say, "or not, since He doesn't exist".

There's absolutely NO ROOM for any type of theism in any form of government for the people, especially given our Constitutional protection from such forced ideas.

If the person is competent, highly educated, logical, has the experience that would indicate that he/she would do well to represent the American people - and is the most qualified for the job, of course I'd think he/she would make a fair President. As an atheist, I've given theist the benefit of the doubt and voted for them (after all, no politician is perfect). I realize, however, that the majority of the U.S. (eh hmmm - theist) would never, ever, consider an atheist, no matter how smart and well qualified that person may be.

Who knows if it would be fair, it depends on the person, but it sure would be a positive thing to get religion divorced from your politics....It does NOT belong there and its influence destroying your country.

Whose to say we haven't had one already? I would lie in a heartbeat to save my life from being burned at the stake, to get a job etc. But either way, that atheist would still be unfair, because politicians only care about money. Atheists can be douchebags, too.
