The Book of Enoch and Ancient Astronauts

The controversy surrounding the Old Testament “Book of Enoch” will always be with us as more theologies reject this unique chronicle than accept it as part of the cannon of the Bible. This is understandable because when interpreted literally, it makes little sense.

The famous R.H. Charles translation of the ancient book was first published in 1912. Then in 1948 with the discovery the Dead Sea Scrolls, seven fragmentary copies of the Aramaic text of the book were discovered. In later years, several portions of the Greek text surfaced.

Just take any ancient myth, gloss the word 'gods' as 'astronauts'. Add some speculation 'perhaps they had lost their women' (how very careless of them) and you make this stuff look feasible to the eagerly believing ancient astronaut cultists, especially those who link it to Bible Authority.

The Book of Enoch is not a Christian scripture. It is apochryphal. No knowledgeable sincere Christian should accept it as scripture, or even marginaly useful. Atheists, however, might embrace the ancient astronaut theory of human origins.

Some do, though it can become almost a religion in itself with the cult-think method of 'This is the theory, what evidence can we find to support it?' Cue grainy photos of ferroconcrete on Mars, claims about ancient stoneworking by laser -cutters and a few large rocks vaguely resembling human faces.

No -one ever said that all atheists were meticulously rational. Yet like panspermia, alien genetic sowing is one of the four possibilities along with Abiogenesis and goddunnit creation. None of them have yet been proven so agnosticism is the correct response, until we do know.

Thank goodness ancient biblical texts also tell us the whole world was flooded but 2 of every kind of animal was saved in 400 ft long wooden boat, that large fishes can be used as a ferry service to preaching opportunities, that total genocide of your enemy is OK and that dead carpenters can come back to life and save you from your naturally tainted nature because your ancient ancestor ate a piece of fruit that she shouldn't have.... or ancient alien civil wars wouldn't make any sense at all.

Maybe the 900 year-old alcoholic boat-builder was an alien.

That really would help explain it.

The book IS useful, believe it or not. It helps to expand on some rather vague or incomplete passages in the bible. Furthermore, it clearly had some strong influence on the late pre-Christian era and beyond.
