Anybody with half a brain and some common sense could tell you this is not the case. Here is a decent site with some issues to consider.

The claim that there are no atheists in foxholes is really an insult not to atheists, but to soldiers and to all believers, because it is based on the assumption of cowardice and the idea that the reason to believe in a god is not because it is a reasoned and sincerely held conclusion, but because the believer fears the unknown or the possibility of death.

Not only is there no reason to think it true, I am also shocked that theists so happily trot out this claim.

Like the claim that people convert on their death bed, I think it does more to HARM theism than benefit it.

Essentially what they are saying is that atheists or non beleiver when faced with extreme duress, illness, fear or worse, are likely to turn to god.

All this says to me is that the idea there is a god is so devoid of rationality that it takes extreme buffeting of ones mental faculties in the form of duress and deterioration, to put them in a state where someone will accept the idea.

Hardly something to be proud of. If I had an idea that people had to be under duress, mental faculty hampering or worse before they will lend it credence... I would abandon the idea.

I trot out this line when confronted with the "no athiests in foxholes" comment.

If God is protecting believers, why do they need a foxhole in the first place?

The people that say this believe in these god things that live in the sky, which pretty much proves how reliable their 'common sense' is in the first place.

Were I in a foxhole, I don't what the guy with me cowering with his eyes closed asking sky daddy to get us (probably just him ) out of this mess, but with his eyes open and shooting back.

And if you find yourself in a foxhole in the first place it is probably in a war over which god is the only god in the first place.

Although I haven't been in combat, I've been an atheist every year I've been in the navy. If I do end up in a combat situation, I'll still be an atheist, just an atheist that is now pissed at my decision to join and the ignorance of our conflict loving species.

In the Marine Corps it's called a fighting hole. If I had a "fox" in my fighting hole, I wouldn't have been concerned about fighting.
