There is a website that is trying to count atheists and agnostics. I think it has methodological problems, but you might want to check it out: Atheist Census

Right now, most people seem to have a categorization system based on the strength of one's belief in something called God. A better categorization system would be based on the extent to which a person's actions are guided by their own instincts, empathy, logic, and reasoning. There would probably be a large pile of atheists, agnostics, deists, agnostic theists, some Catholics and Methodists, but probably not their clergy; some Hindus and Jews and Buddhists, and generally at least a small percentage of most religions. The other pile would be composed of theists who feel strongly that their religion is entirely accurate.

I am also coming to think that simply asking people whether they believe in 'God' (let alone a 'Higher Power' would give an entirely misleading result.

The general assumption is that anyone who says 'yes' is a Christian or at least a Bible - believer.

That recently posted Penn you tube pointed out that many people who believe in 'God' actually have no time for organized religion, some are deist or call themselves agnostic and, if we look at our pal Boxcar's posts, while he has gone agnostic from atheist, he belongs under our tent rather than under the Christian one.

While these surveys may not set out to make it seem that Christianity is more than holding its own, I feel that they may be skewing the results by posing the question is a way that would lead anyone (including atheists) to first off assume that all those who said 'Yes' were all fervent believers in Christianity or one of the other religions of the Book.

Iran has 4000+ entries 10% listed as No religious background and 58% of polled are atheist I find this to be very encouraging.
Turkey the most western Muslim country has out of 14350+ respondents 64% are atheist and 2000+ declare no religious background.
