The Rabbi on CO shootings (related topic)
Maybe I have tunnel vision about atheism (like I do about feminism) but I had to notice when the rabbi speaking at the televised prayer vigil in Colorado, he referred to, "The god who looks over those who have no god," or something like that. Of course, I didn't like his assumption that atheists are misinformed! But at least the rabbi knows we exist, and yes, might actually have feelings about the shootings. On the other hand, there was a Baptist minister who spoke forcefully but who pointed out that a member of this church was in that theater and escaped safely "thanks to the grace of god." Wow, what a slap in the face to those who didn't escape safely and those who mourn them- no god grace for them, eh? This is one thing I find disgusting and cruel about the idea that Jaysus or god or someone saved MY house but my neighbor whose family got killed in the tornado, well, too bad. "Our prayers were answered," only if you live to report that.
On another tangent, in the 2008 elections or convocatons or whatever, I certainly remember Pres. Obama including, along with "Jews, Christians, Hindus, etc etc," "our friends without faith" or something like that. Just like people joked and said Clinton was the first black president, maybe Obama is the first atheist president.

Haha! Let's not give Obama that title until after the election.

Yes. I have no doubt that they felt that they were making perfectly reasonable points needful for everyone to hear. but to my ears it sounds like beating the drum for theism, having a go at the unbelievers and generally comes across as bigotry of the kind that they (perhaps) never intended.
