Well I can honestly say the only one that I was a little surprised at was Australia. Though I've never been there....so I can't really say I actually know what happening there. But I've never heard of it be in hotbed for atheism. But hey...you learn something knew everyday.

The UK clearly has some work to do before it can do as well in the atheist nation stakes as in the Olympics.

Surprised that the UK isn't on the list. I know maybe 1 or 2 people who are religious, and even then, they aren't serious about it.

I rather suspect that the results of the survey have been skewed by 'Census -christianity' as regards the UK. In the US, Religion is associated with patriotism, in the UK is is associated with..ah, hmm... a desire to differentiate oneself from....ah, Foreigners.

As an American, I don't think we deserved the honorable mention. Although it's clear that fundamentalist theism is in its death throes, its tenacity, the fear with which more moderate persons defer to it, and its death-grip on the Republican party and therefore many of the reigns of power, make this country a scary and depressing place for a freethinker to live. If I did not have the inertia of family commitments keeping me here, I'd give some VERY serious thought to relocating to one of the other countries on the list. In many respects, I'd rather freeze my touche off in Norway.
