I think mythology and other fictional literature can still contain story morals. My favorite is the one that goes something like instead of criticizing that guy with the splinter in his eye, focus on the 2x4 in your own.
I registered just to express my incredulity at the fact that so many people can't answer a simple question without qualifying the answer to an amusing point, saddling the topic with their psychological baggage, or flying off into a tangent about the ills of religiosity. Bonus points for hypocritical condescension!
Yes. Whether he was the first or not, and since the question assumes he existed, yes. Putting something bigger than yourself above your own perceived needs ( love God with all mind, heart, etc), and treating others how you would generally like to be treated (the Golden rule, people) are very good things. Anything other than yes or no is at least a mild distraction from the OP.
I could make the argument that, for most people, a cosmic cop would make them behave less like a selfish dick, but I'm not sure the evidence really supports it.
