Who cares if it is a minor holiday, or a created holiday, or what ever holiday. People celebrate those holidays too, to those people they are important. Why should YOUR holiday take the entire month of December? Heck, I was seeing Christmas commercials on TV, and christmas stuff on the shelves BEFORE Halloween. Please try to control YOUR holiday, it is eating up several months worth of holidays.
As a Christian, I'd be pretty weak if you got me all upset by saying Happy Holidays. As posted above, it's turned into a commercial mess anyways. Costco started displaying the merchandise in September.
God (sorry), we come off as hypersensitive sometimes. Myself included. I've had people tell me Happy Holidays, usually clerks in stores before. I just tell them "you too" or repeat it back to them. There's nothing wrong with it.
I think the clerks are instructed to say it because there are so many holidays in the month.

Thank you. That is my point, I have had "Christians" going off on me because I defended others saying happy holidays. I generally return what ever someone says to me, or say happy holidays or merry Christmas depending on which ever happens to come to mind first. I'm not a Scrooge, or a Grinch really. I even had my tree set up and ready for decorations on Thanksgiving day.
Sorry for getting overly defensive on the issue.
I don't say anything. I smile and act mute while pointing to my throat then fake some made up sign language... Saves me the hassle of which to call it.. Everyone is happy that way and I'm politically correct from all standpoints . Now on a moral level.....
Why is it political correctness to say happy holidays? There are in fact multiple holidays going on. I just don't get this whole "pc" argument.
It's not - the political correctness comes from those who demand that either 'Happy Holidays' or 'Merry Christmas' be exclusively used. Such is political correctness, which is nothing but certain speech codes, which we all employ - but when you hear someone complaining about 'political correctness', what they generally mean is 'only those speech codes I don't happen to like', which makes it little more than an exercise in narcissism.
But simply saying 'Happy Holidays' is not a matter of political correctness.
I say Merry Christmas because it is the main celebration of the season. The Happy Holidays thing is just too PC for me.
Actually, Julian 658, it isn't. Fact: Christmas isn't the only holiday celebration that takes place on December 25th. Another fact: December 25th isn't the only date for the celebration of Christ's birth.
By the way, when I'm "being PC", I'm "being Personally Courteous." Perhaps you might give it a try.

Interesting that you should put it just that way. The current Christmas holiday was started in the fourth century AD by Pope Julius I, the Bishop of Rome. Broadening our scope a bit, the Winter Solstice takes place around December 21st, and it is celebrated all around the world. These celebrations have been around for far longer than Christianity. Many of our so-called "Christmas traditions" have been drawn - some might say stolen - from these celebrations. Included are decorating the home with lights and greenery (a strong and thoroughly-documented case can be made that the "Christmas Tree" is in fact a pagan tradition), the "Yule Log" and many MANY more.
I'm not trying to denigrate Christmas -- far from it. I've celebrated the Christian Christmas each year beginning with my earliest memories, and will continue to do so until I draw my last breath. I'm just defending the facts.
Here's the simple truth -- the fact that others celebrate different holidays and events at this time of year HAS NO BEARING on the legitimacy, power or importance of my celebration. This simply isn't a binary, win/lose, good/bad, right/wrong kind of thing, folks!
IMO, to INSIST that others say "Merry Christmas" to me, and to INSIST that I'll only say "Merry Christmas" to them, is simultaneously ignorant, narrow-minded and arrogant.
In closing, here's wishing that everyone here has the very best Season ever, regardless of how you may celebrate it!
