According the Wikipedia article about religion, religious belief had decreased worldwide 9% in 2012 compared to 2000. I think many things can be attributed to this but what do you think are some important factors in this decline? IMO that's a pretty rapid decline considering its a little less than a percent a year.

I put it down to internet discussion. It might also be due in part to some high profile atheists putting up a good case. perhaps also the various bits of evidence pointing to no god rather than a god, might have something to with it.

These factors may also have a knock - on effect that people understand atheism better and begin to realize that is what they are, when they just thought they were doubters. I'm rather eagerly anticipating the next set of figures.

I think that science is the #1 enemy of religion.

People's increasing understanding of science - what it tells us about life, the universe and their origins and how much it contradicts religious beliefs - is leading to the decline of religion and increase of unbelief worldwide.

This is a genie that is very hard to put back into the bottle.

Default Why is religion declining worldwide?

This is true in more ways than one. Religions have failed to represent God faithfully and accurately in favor of achieving carnal or worldly power and control over their members. They have abandoned their own spiritual development and that of their flocks by retaining and promoting the ancient ignorance and superstitions of our primitive and savage ancestors as a sign of faith in God. They have prevented any spiritual maturity by emphasizing anachronistic cultural mores and rules and by refusing to incorporate 2000+ years of knowledge and understanding into their doctrines and dogma. Promoting iron age and bronze age mores and cultural beliefs and practices in modern societies has been a travesty of the highest proportions afflicting misery and provoking conflict for millennia.
