Jewish friends do not because it is the New Year for Christians according to the Gregorian calendar based on approximate year of birth of Jesus.

We already have days identified to mark the rumored birth, death and zombie walk of your guy Haysoos.
What the hell does the calendar used by every developed country, primarily for reasons related to commerce have to do with being atheists, theist, or confused. The same reason that we have time zones, so that everyone is on the same page. Besides, which fictional character of the bible was born, died, was executed, walked on water, etc. on New Years.
In this country, it is the end of the tax year, pay any deductible bill (taxes, medical, etc.) before 12/31 so you can deduct it from last year taxes, and of course resets many things like medical insurance deductibles.
I have a dentist appoint on 1/2, the calendar is merely a mechanism to allow me to know when to show up. It's going to work our real well that my dentist office operates on the very same calendar. That way the atheist shows up at the time the Jewish dentist has set aside to clean his teeth.
