Yes, indeed and there are several sites with collections of deconversion stories. That is what makes me think that a tome on the stalls might make a good read. Some of them are quite compelling.

I was going to bring this up on the Atheist reading list thread, but I'll add it here as it might be worth a look for you: The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University. It's about a student journalist - mostly secular - who for a semester goes undercover at Liberty University, the one run by Jerry Falwell. What I liked about the book was that he approached it a bit like an anthropologist, and he didn't do it to make fun of them, but rather to understand the culture. (He was an intern for AJ Jacob - who wrote The Year of Living Biblically, among other books - when they visited the university and Roose was perplexed at his interaction with some of the students and was inspired to research further.)

I would actually be interested in reading a book like the one you described. I am curious how the students actually interact with the world once they are no longer surrounded by the school/university and the rules/culture. (Or do they continue to surround themselves by choosing to work in churches, or companies with Christian philosophies, etc? Docent at the Creation Museum? Or do they hide their identity?)
