Regarding that 'fig tree'. For myself, the whole point of the story is that it gives an insight as to how hard it is to be a 'Christian'. Certainly not easy, very difficult and if one seeks to be one perhaps a vocation of frustration when taken seriously and examining an ideal. Ideally it should bring out the great virtues. Anyone who espouses the creed and 'fails' well I give'em points if they keep trying to keep to an ideal agreed to with themselves. Humanity (and Christians) of course aren't perfect.

I truly believe it's just an over-reaching concern for "souls". Not explicitly meant to control, just to protect... ironic as it may be.
