I also think control.

Religion generally tells people how they need to behave and lead their lives by promising them a reward. Don't do as they say and its punishment.

Yes, social control. It is starkly obvious not only in the Arab world but also here in the good old usa where religious beliefs are being funnelled to very specific political ends.

Same as it ever was.

My opinion.....

religion was founded in stark times. People were either very rich and powerful, or peasants/slaves leaving miserable life.

The promise of a great afterlife was to give these poor people hope and meaning, and they were given rules to live by under threat of not reaching this paradise.

lol @ those who call it "control".
God does not put a gun to your head or throws you in jail if you decide not to follow.

The real control is our man made laws. Try not to pay income taxes and penalty will be immediately served by your fellow human beings. That sounds like more of a "control".

Guess that depends on which religion you follow. Because in some of them that is EXACTLY what god is purported to do. An eternal jail called "Hell".

Thankfully there is not a JOT of arguments, evidence, data or reasoning on offer from such people to suggest this is actually true however, or that there even is a god to begin with.

It's been said that the makings of a good cult is that the leader gets a lot of money, women, or power.

Having said that, it's a bit presumptuous to assume all religions are simply to satisfy the carnal desires of a man.

Except the 66 books that said God inspired.

I think it was Napoleon who said that religion is what keeps the poor from killing the rich.

Do you consider Napolean to be a good role model?
