You know I have often though about that, how Atheists/Agnostics are arrogant for saying there is no god, but religious people are just moral. Our society is not normal in the western world. Every other western country is less religious than us. The next biggest Western Country is Germany, where 62% are irreligious, we are 36%.

Wow, I am in awe! I not only think you did the right thing, but it shows your integrity and willingness to be truthful to your child no matter what! That can only breed trust and show your son that while he is free to chose what he believes feel-good delusions create an excuse for people not act with accountability or with the best intentions. While the five year old might not completely grasp that, it will become evident with age.

I think i would have said something along the lines of, "many people believe in God but i don't. Some people like me think he was made up, like Santa Clause was, to make people feel better."

FWIW- This reminds me of my being the first in my class to learn about Santa Claus. I was excited to "spread the word." It was funny how many kids used the rationale (maybe told to them by their parents), "Santa Clause IS real but he doesn't come and give us presents."

Makes me wonder what the impact of something like "God MIGHT be real but s/he doesn't have any impact in our lives."

?

Whatever weird stuff you want to do with a nutty mix of End Times prophecy and numerology, we are confident that whether there is a 'god' or not, you will learn nothing about it from reading the Bible, and thus whatever happens to the world - nobody lives forever, so trying to frighten us with doomsday predictions impresses us no more than hellthreat- we goddless bastards are right and we are right tell our kids so.

Well fearless would seem to have its limits and the concept of moderation has already proved itself.
