"All I want now is to leave Egypt. Life is not possible for atheists here," the 23-year-old engineering student told AFP from his home in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.
Arrested in November, he was released on bail after having spent 55 days behind bars. "It was like living in a tomb," he said.
If he kept quiet about his atheism, he should be allright (under the Egyptian constitution), but if he was being asked by his neighbours why he didn't do the mosque -thing, his answers could easily be construed as 'insulting Islam'.
Jizzuz Indonesia, Egypt. It's a crime to be atheist. Somebody somewhere or a lot of bodies and a lot of wheres are eventually going to be answering charges of human rights abuses.
It's a sad fact of life that sometimes discretion can make your life a lot easier.
Maybe someone else will have learned from what happened to him.
Sure can understand his desire to leave Egypt.
