he perfectly encapsulated the dreary, hypocritical, lip service that religion is here. Perhaps that explains rather than having to pawn our empire to pay for lease -lend why religion is in decline here, and perhaps a new Faith is needed.
Yes, that is the point I was trying to make.
Britain is not as powerful as it once was, so the people think their god has deserted them. I bet the Greeks felt the same way about 2000 years ago after Rome became more powerful and actually stole the Greek gods and renamed them.
My question is: So what? A country doesn't need to be the Number One World Power for its people to be happy and lead fulfilling lives. In my opinion, the British Culture has led the way in civilizing the world and in America the British people are very respected in our TV shows. The best Star Trek captain we ever had is Patrick Stewart and Nigel Lythgoe is the brains behind our best reality shows.
Eventually, some silly religious movement will probably take over Europe. In the meantime, enjoy what you have and watch this video of the great new British song that is sweeping over America. Could any other country have produced such a magnificent work of art?
While you may think "One Pound Fish" does not represent the best music to come out of your country, you should be proud that your culture gives immigrants a chance to express their creativity, and that benefits all of us. For example, we are proud that America gives a person from a Lebanese family a chance to create a whole new genre of music - Surfing Music.
I may be reading my own views into it, but I get the impression that the people here do NOT think that God has deserted them: they think there was no help from a god in building an empire, even if there is a god, which, I believe, they very much doubt. Empire is history and there is no more point in moping about it than Italy moping about the lost Roman empire. We are even getting over the reaction against it (I never felt part of the general need to go around apologizing to everyone for it) and taking it as a bit of interesting history and with much to be quite proud of, give or take the Opium wars.
What I'm saying is: I don't think the current increase of irreligion is anything to do with our decline from No 1 status.

Right, me neither.
Reasons for decline in religion in Britain are many and various.
Scorn for religion, probably started by aforementioned old Henry, - it went downhill from there.
The embracing and fostering of scientific discovery had a lot to do with it. Newton, Darwin, Cavendish, Maxwell, Davy, Faraday, Herschel, Dirac, Crick..
The decline of religion is a cultural one. It just became less and less important in peoples lives. We basically grew out of it I think.

The US will get there I reckon...I'm estimating about 50 years. Most of us will be dead by then LOL.
Tell you what, let's meet back here in 50 years to compare notes. I'm banking on still being alive... I'll be 97 but determined to hang on to my faculties.
By then I might have my second C-D rep point gold star.
Most Anglicanism in the UK is weak tea. The more it tries to be "relevant", the less people want to have anything to do with it.
