My opinion, on this is that if you're going to hold the "I don't know" position, you might as well be an atheist.
Atheists have a lack of belief in a God or gods - generally because not enough information is known to confirm one way or another. It's a rather eloquent way of saying "I don't know."

The only reason I can see for not identifying as an atheist is to avoid the term "atheist." (which can be a legitimate reason, unfortunately)

Personally, I find intellectual honesty more important than what others think of me, so I prefer the term atheist.

Yeah, the context is changing these days. Back in the segan days atheist basically made claims of "no gods" now that the ranks are filling with more rational atheist, where the claim is more the traits assigned are wrong, I tend to agree with ya.
