I don't mean someone who is religious 1/168th of the week (that hour in church on Sunday morning), but a person who lives totally by the teachings of Jesus as reported in the New Testament. I haven't, but I'm only 65 years old, I still might.

I have known people who live their faith hour to hour rather than on Easter and Christmas or maybe at weekly service. But they tend to be operating independently or in spite of their church, so I conclude that what they are living out is their own goodness.

My late wife's aunt and uncle are a great example of that. Pillars of the community and if actual practical good works are being done or good advice being dispensed, it is coming from them. Until he could not longer do it, for example, the uncle organized other men to help him make free ramps for the handicapped, and he did house maintenance for many widows and orphans. Word gets around and if someone needs advice and mentoring, this couple is the go-to, not their own pastor or elders. They sort of float above the local church doing their own thing quietly and without fanfare (or help).

So, closer to Christ is farther from a church?

I was one. 3 different flavors, in fact.

Are you thinking the NT Jesus was a nice person?
Bad things about Jesus in the New Testament.

Not at all, which is rather my point.

ETA: Cafeteria Christians will claim that they follow "His true words", of course.

Have I met a Christian? Define that absolutely and I'll think about it.

Even Christians can't tell you what that means.

Unless they have a split personality, one loving everybody and the other damning them to hell, I can't see how they could.

I've personally met about 3.

You can find them in the 'no war tax' circles. They choose to live below the federal minimum for income tax, so they don't pay to support war. This necessarily means that they are not part of the consumer society, and their personal 'economy' relies on relationships, not money. Just like Jesus.
